Advent ‘First Religious Suite for Organ’ | Toccata on “Creator alme siderum” | Pietro Yon

“Conditor Alme Siderum,” also known as “Creator of the Stars of Night,” is a traditional Christian hymn dating back to at least the 7th century. Historically, it’s been associated with the season of Advent, a period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ in Christian liturgy. Its text invokes the creator of the stars and pleads for salvation and guidance, reflecting the themes of waiting and anticipation central to Advent.

Pietro Yon, an Italian organist and composer, known for his works in the early 20th century, created a Toccata on “Conditor Alme Siderum” as part of his “First Organ Suite for Advent.” The movements in the suite are:
1. Prelude (Rorate Coeli)
2. Introit (Veni Emmanuel)
3. Offertory. Veni Domine (Hymn for Peace)
4. Communion (Ave Maria)
5. Finale. Toccata on the Gregorian Hymn “Creator alme siderum”

I recorded this on the Billerbeck sample set (Sonus Paradisi) using the Hauptwerk virtual organ software.

LATIN
Conditor alme siderum,
aeterna lux credentium,
Christe, redemptor omnium,
exaudi preces supplicum.

Qui condolens interitu
mortis perire saeculum,
salvasti mundum languidum,
donans reis remedium.

Vergente mundi vespere,
uti sponsus de thalamo,
egressus honestissima
Virginis matris clausula.

Cuius forti potentiae
genu curvantur omnia;
caelestia, terrestria
nutu fatentur subdita.

Te, Sancte, fide quaesumus,
venture iudex saeculi,
conserva nos in tempore
hostis a telo perfidi.

Sit, Christe, rex piissime,
tibi Patrique gloria
cum Spiritu Paraclito,
in sempiterna saecula. Amen.

ENGLISH
Kind Creator of the stars,
eternal light of those who believe,
Christ, redeemer of all,
hear the prayers of your suppliants.

Who, pitying the world’s demise,
to death by your own death,
saved the languishing world,
granting a remedy to the guilty.

As the world was verging towards evening,
like a bridegroom from his chamber,
you came forth from the most honorable
cloister of the Virgin Mother.

To your mighty power
everything bends its knee;
heavenly and earthly things
confess themselves subject to your command.

We beseech you, Holy One, in faith,
judge of the world to come,
preserve us in time
from the spear of the deceitful enemy.

May there be, most merciful Christ, king,
glory to you and to the Father
with the Paraclete Spirit,
for eternal ages. Amen.
