Crown Imperial – William Walton | Bowral Autumn Music Festival 2022 | Organ Prelude

I’m pleased to have been invited to give the three “organ preludes” on three separate days of the Bowral Autumn Music Festival. The 2022 festival opened with William Walton’s Crown Imperial!

This popular march was commissioned for the coronation of King George VI in Westminster Abbey in 1937. It was also played at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953 and the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011. It is in the Pomp and Circumstance tradition, with a brisk opening contrasting with a broad middle section. The music surges with irrepressible energy to a heroic climax and resounding conclusion. The original orchestral form has undergone many arrangements. This version by Herbert Murrill incorporates the cuts by Walton made in 1963. (Information from the BAMF 2022 programme)
