Stabat Mater – Giovanni Battista Pergolesi | Swell Vox

This well-known setting of the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi was originally scored for soprano and alto, violin I and II, viola and continuo. In this recording, we give a rendition with two tenors, David and Tony Lee, and myself on organ. The Stabat Mater is a 13th century hymn to Mary depicting her suffering as Jesus Christ’s mother during his crucifixion. As we approach the season of Lent, the Swell Vox crew are exploring Lenten and Passiontide repertoire.
