Toccata in E minor, P.462 – Johann Pachelbel | 1721 ST. GEORGENKIRCHE SILBERMANN

Pachelbel’s ‘Toccata in E minor’ is definitely a change in character from his well-known ‘Canon in D’. It’s a very serious sounding piece right from the opening line, full of drama with engaging passages and sequences. It has been a while since I’ve played some early music as my focus has currently been on contemporary composers. I hope you enjoy this small shift in musical history.

I’ve recorded this piece on the sample set of the organ at St. Georgenkirche in Rötha, Germany. It’s considered one of the few remaining nearly all original instruments by Gottfried Silbermann and one of the first available Hauptwerk sample sets. The organ has been visited by many famous organists and has been played by Felix Mendelssohn during his period in Leipzig.
